The Bathtub Refinishing Process

Refinishing bathtubs is a highly detailed process that requires professional training and equipment. Many of our chemicals are designed to be used exclusively by professionals who are trained in their proper use. Read on to learn more about the steps involved in transforming your old bathtub into the impressive centerpiece of your bathroom — all in just one day!

First, your existing bathtub is professionally cleaned with specialized industrial cleaners. Many of these products break down the original surface in preparation for a brand-new finish. All dirt, soap scum, detergents, dyes, and other contaminants are removed, and the existing plumbing fixtures and drains are specially prepared for the process. The surrounding tile walls are also prepared if they are to be refinished. We also remove the original caulk line on the bathtub, which is often mildewed. Any pits, chips, or other damages to the original bathtub surface are repaired using specialty products designed for these surfaces.

Next, your bathroom is masked off, thereby protecting surfaces that were not meant to be refinished. Masking off your bathroom also minimizes dust and ensures a pristine refinished surface. Air registers and dampers in the bathroom are also shut off and masked, and special lighting and ventilation equipment are set up in the bathroom. Finally, a non-slip surface may be installed if ordered by the customer.

Before and After Refinishing a Bathtub

The application of your new surface takes place over three phases: the surface prep phase, the bonding and priming phase, and the topcoat phase. All of these phases require several application steps, and many of the products we use are applied by special spray equipment, ensuring a beautiful, durable, and high-gloss finish.

Much of this work takes place in a sealed room and must be performed by trained personnel wearing protective equipment, and therefore, you should never enter a room where a refinishing process is taking place unless escorted by a refinishing professional.

Upon completion, your bathtub refinishing professional will remove his/her equipment and check the surface to make sure that it looks as shiny and new as the day it was first installed. At this time, anti-slip mats are also installed if ordered by the customer. Next, bathroom surfaces are unmasked, a new bathtub caulk seam is installed, and all plumbing and drains are reset for a return to service.

Cure times for the products — also known as return-to-service times — may vary depending on the type of system used. We'll discuss all this with you ahead of time.
